300-level UI medical student dies after ingesting insecticide

A tragic incident has been reported at the University of Ibadan, where a 300-level medical student died after allegedly ingesting an insecticide, according to reports cited by MSN.

The student, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was said to have been found in distress inside his residence at Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall on campus. Witnesses reported that he appeared disoriented and was foaming at the mouth before losing consciousness.

According to preliminary accounts, the student reportedly admitted to consuming a toxic insecticide, believed to be a locally available product commonly referred to as “Sniper,” shortly before collapsing.

Fellow students and hall authorities quickly intervened, arranging for his urgent transfer to the institution’s health facility, Jaja Clinic, where he received initial treatment including oxygen support and intravenous fluids. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later moved to the emergency unit of the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan. Despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilise him, the student was pronounced dead later that day.

University officials confirmed the incident, describing it as a deeply distressing loss for the academic community. Reports also suggest that the student had recently withdrawn from social activities and was less engaged with his studies, although the exact circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear.

Authorities have not ruled out further investigation, while the tragic event has sparked renewed conversations around student mental health and the accessibility of toxic substances on campuses.
