Manipur CM highlights agriculture as key to youth empowerment
Imphal, March 24: Yumnam Khemchand Singh has underscored agriculture as a key driver of youth empowerment and economic growth, highlighting its central role in shaping the future of the state. Addressing the valedictory function of the Agri-Youth Parliament 2026 at the Central Agricultural University in Imphal, the Chief Minister said that increasing youth participation in agriculture signals a positive and encouraging shift.
Singh emphasized that agriculture remains a critical sector for both Manipur and the country, noting that over half of the population depends on it for livelihood. He called for sustained policy support, innovation, and modernization to strengthen the sector and make it more attractive to young people.
Highlighting the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship, the Chief Minister said platforms like the Agri-Youth Parliament provide opportunities for young minds to engage with real-world challenges and develop agri-based startups. He interacted with participants, innovators, and entrepreneurs at over 30 exhibition stalls, appreciating their technological solutions and creative ideas.
Singh also announced that the state government would explore ways to enhance youth engagement in agriculture through the startup ecosystem, in consultation with the Planning Department.
During the event, a policy document titled “Agricultural Extension Innovations for Achieving US $1.3 Trillion North East India Economy @ 2047 (Shillong Declaration)” was released, outlining a roadmap for agricultural transformation in the region.
The Chief Minister stressed that with proper support, innovation, and youth-driven initiatives, agriculture can become a powerful engine for employment, sustainability, and inclusive development in Manipur and the wider Northeast.
