Department of Agriculture launches mega oil palm plantation drive
The Department of Agriculture has launched a mega oil palm plantation drive as part of the Centre’s broader push to increase domestic edible-oil production and reduce dependence on imports. The campaign is being implemented under the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), which aims to expand oil-palm cultivation across several states.
According to official documents and agriculture-sector reports, the mega plantation drive has already been carried out across dozens of districts, with participation from state governments and oil-palm processing companies. The initiative focuses on distributing high-quality saplings, providing technical training to farmers and promoting modern cultivation practices.
The drive is expected to bring thousands of hectares under oil-palm cultivation and encourage farmers to diversify from traditional crops. Officials said the programme includes training sessions on plantation management, irrigation practices and crop maintenance to ensure higher productivity and long-term income stability. The initiative has also been supported by private sector companies involved in oil-palm processing, which are helping expand the value chain and market access for farmers.

Agriculture experts believe the plantation drive is crucial for strengthening India’s edible-oil security. Officials said the mega plantation drive will continue in phases, with awareness campaigns and large-scale plantation programmes planned in multiple states over the coming months.
