Farmers' Income Doubled
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday stated in the Lok Sabha that farmers’ incomes in India have “doubled” due to sustained government initiatives, while highlighting a sharp rise in the agriculture budget and production levels.
Responding during Question Hour, the minister said multiple policy measures—such as the expansion of Minimum Support Price (MSP), increased fertiliser subsidies, and stronger support systems—have contributed to boosting farm incomes across the country. He asserted that in several cases, farmers’ earnings have not only doubled but even “tripled or quadrupled” depending on crop patterns and regional interventions.
Chouhan also underlined that the agriculture sector has seen significant financial backing from the Centre. He noted that the agriculture budget, which stood at around ₹19,000 crore earlier, has now increased to over ₹1.3 lakh crore, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening rural livelihoods and farm productivity.
In addition, food grain production in the country has witnessed substantial growth, rising by about 44% since 2014, indicating improved output alongside income gains.
The minister further emphasized the role of cooperatives, credit expansion, and investment in agricultural infrastructure as key drivers of this growth. He said the government has disbursed nearly ₹5 lakh crore in the last five years to support farmers and allied sectors.
The statement came amid opposition concerns over whether the long-standing promise of doubling farmers’ income had been fully achieved. However, Chouhan reiterated that the government remains committed to further strengthening the agriculture sector and ensuring higher incomes for farmers in the coming years.
