Union Agriculture Minister Calls for Urgent Research on Arecanut Safety Amid Farmer Concerns.

New Delhi, August 26, 2025 — Union Agriculture Minister Shivaraj Singh Chouhan has directed the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) to expedite its study on the potential carcinogenic effects of arecanut, following global concerns raised by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The research team has been asked to submit its findings within a defined timeframe.

The directive was issued during a high-level meeting with Union Ministers from Karnataka and representatives from arecanut-growing regions. The Minister emphasised that the WHO’s statement had created confusion among farmers and consumers, and a scientific review was essential to provide clarity.

“Arecanut has been part of Indian tradition for centuries. It’s used in rituals, celebrations, and daily life. We must ensure that our farmers are not left in uncertainty,” said Minister Chouhan.

The meeting also addressed several challenges faced by arecanut farmers, including the spread of areolate mildew, a disease that threatens areca plantations. Scientific teams are actively working on solutions, and discussions were held on improving access to clean and disease-free planting material.

In a significant move, the Minister announced that the government is seriously considering compensation for farmers who have suffered heavy losses due to viral infections affecting their crops.
