Maharashtra’s First Smart Intelligent Village at Satnavari

Transforming Rural India: First Smart Intelligent Village in Maharashtra.

In a quiet corner of Nagpur district, a small village named Satnavari, just 31 km from the city, is making big waves. On August 24, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially launched a groundbreaking initiative that could redefine rural life across India — the country’s first Smart and Intelligent Village.

This isn’t just about installing gadgets or going digital. It’s about empowering villagers with technology that makes everyday life easier, healthier, safer, and more sustainable.

What Is a Smart Intelligent Village?

Imagine a village where:

That’s the vision behind a Smart Intelligent Village — a model of rural development powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and digital connectivity.

Why Satnavari?

Satnavari was chosen because it had the right mix of infrastructure — a pond, farmland, schools, anganwadis, and community spaces — to test a wide range of smart solutions. And the villagers were ready to embrace change.

What’s Happening on the Ground?

Here’s a look at the smart interventions already in place:

Smart Farming

Smart Fisheries

Village Safety

Clean Drinking Water

Healthcare at Your Doorstep

Digital Education

Emergency Response

Smart Waste Management

Fire Safety

All of this is monitored by a Central Network Operations Centre (C-NOC) that ensures everything runs smoothly and issues are fixed quickly.

What’s the Cost?

Building a Smart, Intelligent Village like Satnavari costs around ₹50 lakh. The pilot was funded by VoICE (Voice of Indian Communication Technology Enterprises), a consortium of 24 Indian telecom and tech companies. These companies, many of them startups, contributed resources in hopes of participating in future tenders as the project scales up.

What’s Next?

The vision is bold: 10 Smart Villages in every taluka, eventually transforming over 3,500 villages across Maharashtra.

The model is ready to be replicated in under 10 days — but challenges remain. The biggest? Reliable internet connectivity. Many Gram Panchayats still lack stable broadband, and poor maintenance of fibre networks can hinder progress.

A Glimpse into the Future

The Smart Intelligent Village project is more than a tech upgrade — it’s a blueprint for rural transformation. It brings dignity, opportunity, and modern conveniences to places that have long been left behind.

If successful, Satnavari could become the first of many villages where technology meets tradition, and where rural India steps confidently into the future.
