Telangana Agriculture Minister Thummala Nageswara Rao has made a request. He asked the Central Government to set a minimum support price (MSP) for oil palm. The proposed MSP is ₹25,000 per tonne. He also wants to increase the import duty on this crop to 44%. The minister made the request during a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. This meeting took place in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Telangana Urges Centre for ₹25,000 MSP on Oil Palm and Higher Import Duty
Rao highlighted that over 1.06 lakh acres in Telangana are currently under oil palm cultivation, supporting the livelihoods of approximately 72 lakh farmers. He expressed concern that the recent reduction in import duty—from 27.5% to 16.5%—has severely impacted domestic sales, leaving farmers in a state of distress.
Rao also asked the Centre to remove the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on agricultural machinery and equipment. He pointed out that the current 12% GST on such items imposes a significant financial burden on farmers.
The minister asked for Telangana to be prioritised in the new Prime Minister Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana. He also requested that five districts be included: Bhadradri Kothagudem, Narayanpet, Mulugu, Komurambheem Asifabad, and Sangareddy.
