Bitter Gourd Cultivation Guide  

Bitter gourd is a widely grown vegetable known for its medicinal value and strong market demand. It thrives in warm climates and is suitable for summer cultivation. 

Introduction  

Requires a warm and humid climate with temperatures between 25–35°C Grows best in well-drained sandy loam soil Ideal soil pH is between 6.0–7.0 

Climate and Soil

Plough the field 2–3 times to make the soil fine Add organic manure or compost before sowing Prepare raised beds or ridges for proper drainage 

Land Preparation

Use high-quality hybrid seeds for better yield Best sowing time is February to March and June to July Maintain spacing of 1.5–2 meters between rows 

Seed Selection and Sowing

Provide regular watering but avoid waterlogging Irrigate every 3–4 days during summer Reduce watering during the rainy season 

Irrigation

Apply farmyard manure before sowing Use balanced NPK fertilizers Top dressing should be done after 20–25 day

Fertilization

Provide support using trellis or bamboo sticks Helps vines grow upward Improves yield and fruit quality

Support and Training 

Common pests include aphids and fruit flies Use neem oil or organic pesticides Maintain field cleanliness to prevent diseases

Crop is ready in 55–70 days after sowing Harvest tender green fruits Regular harvesting increases production

Average yield is 8–12 tons per acre High demand in markets ensures good returns
