Raw Jute
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for raw jute for the 2026–27 marketing season, offering relief and stability to lakhs of jute farmers across eastern India. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to ensuring remunerative returns for cultivators.
According to an official statement, the MSP has been fixed after taking into account the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). The revised rate is aimed at covering the cost of production while providing a reasonable margin to farmers. The government said the move will particularly benefit growers in major jute-producing states such as West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Odisha, and Meghalaya.
Raw jute, often called the “golden fibre,” plays a crucial role in supporting the rural economy and the eco-friendly packaging industry. The MSP mechanism ensures that farmers are protected from distress sales in case market prices fall below the announced rate. Procurement operations will be undertaken by the Jute Corporation of India, which acts as the nodal agency to safeguard farmers’ interests.

Officials noted that the increase in MSP reflects the government’s broader push to promote natural fibres and reduce dependence on synthetic packaging materials. With growing demand for sustainable products, the enhanced support price is expected to encourage higher acreage and improved productivity in the coming season.
Farmer associations have welcomed the decision, expressing hope that timely procurement and payments will further strengthen confidence in the sector.
