Orange Cultivation Guide: From Planting to Harvest

Oranges grow best in tropical and subtropical climates. – Temperature: 15°C to 30°C  – Sensitive to frost and extreme heat  – Requires plenty of sunlight 

Ideal Climate 

– Well-drained sandy loam soil is ideal  – Soil pH: 5.5 to 7.5  – Avoid waterlogged areas Good soil ensures strong root growth and healthy fruit production.

Soil Requirements 

– Nagpur Orange  – Valencia Orange  – Blood Orange  – Mandarin Orange Choose a variety based on climate and market demand.

Popular Varieties 

– Usually propagated through grafting  – Budding is also common This ensures better fruit quality and faster production compared to seeds.

Propagation Method 

– Best planting time: Monsoon or early winter  – Spacing: 4.5m × 4.5m or 6m × 6m Proper spacing allows good sunlight and air circulation.

Planting Time & Spacing 

– Regular watering is essential, especially in dry seasons  – Avoid overwatering  – Drip irrigation is highly recommended for efficiency 

Irrigation Needs 

– Use organic manure and NPK fertilizers  – Apply in split doses during growth stages Balanced nutrition improves yield and fruit quality.

Common pests: – Citrus psylla  – Leaf miner Diseases:  – Citrus canker  – Root rot Use organic or chemical treatments as needed and maintain hygiene in the orchard.
