Ginger is a popular spice and medicinal crop. It grows well in warm, humid climates and is widely used in cooking and herbal remedies.
– Warm and humid climate – Temperature: 20°C to 30°C – Moderate rainfall or irrigation
– Well-drained loamy or sandy soil is best – Rich in organic matter – pH level: 5.5 to 6.5 – Add compost or farmyard manure before planting
– Best planting season: April to June – Use healthy rhizomes (seed ginger) – Cut into pieces with at least one bud
– Plant rhizomes 4–5 cm deep in soil – Spacing: 20–25 cm between plants – Cover with soil and mulch with dry leaves
– Keep soil moist but not waterlogged – Water immediately after planting – Regular watering during dry periods
– Use organic manure for best results – Apply neem cake and compost – Add fertilizers in split doses if needed
– Rhizome rot – Leaf spot
– Ready in 7–9 months – Harvest when leaves turn yellow and dry – Carefully dig out rhizomes
– High demand in market – Good yield with proper care – Profitable crop for small farmer
