INTRODUCTION

Dragon fruit (pitaya) is a tropical cactus fruit known for its vibrant color and high market demand. It is easy to grow and highly profitable for farmers. 

Climate Requirement

– Prefers warm and humid climate  – Ideal temperature: 20°C to 30°C  – Cannot tolerate frost or extreme cold 

Soil Requirements 

– Well-drained sandy or loamy soil  – pH level: 5.5 to 7  – Avoid waterlogging for healthy growth 

Propagation Method 

– Grown mainly through stem cuttings  – Use 20–25 cm healthy cuttings  – Plant in prepared soil with support 

Planting & Spacing 

– Spacing: 2–3 meters between plants  – Use concrete or wooden poles for support  – Planting season: Spring to early summer 

Irrigation Needs 

– Requires moderate watering  – Water once every 7–10 days  – Reduce watering during rainy season

Fertilizer Management 

– Use organic compost or vermicompost  – Apply NPK fertilizers for better yield  – Regular feeding boosts fruit production 

Pest & Disease Control 

– Common pests: ants, mealybugs  – Use neem oil or organic pesticides  – Maintain field hygiene 

Harvesting Time 

– Fruits ready in 30–50 days after flowering  – Harvest when skin turns bright pink/red  – Handle carefully to avoid damage
