Litchi (Lychee) Cultivation Guide

Litchi is a popular tropical fruit known for its sweet taste and juicy pulp. It is widely grown in India.

Introduction to Litchi

Litchi grows best in a subtropical climate. – Temperature: 20–25°C  – Requires cool, dry winters & hot, humid summers  – Frost and strong winds can damage the crop

Ideal Climate

For healthy growth, litchi needs: – Deep, well-drained loamy soil  – Rich in organic matter  – Ideal pH: 5.5–7.5 Good soil ensures better fruit quality and yield.

Soil Requirements

The most common method is air layering (gootee method). – Ensures early fruiting (3–5 years)  – Produces uniform plants Seed-grown plants take much longer to bear fruit.

Propagation Method

Before planting: – Plough and level the land  – Dig pits (1m × 1m × 1m)  – Fill with compost, manure, and topsoil This improves soil fertility and root development.

Land Preparation

– Best planting time: July–September (monsoon)  – Spacing: 8m × 8m or 10m × 10m Proper spacing allows sunlight and air circulation.

Planting & Spacing

– Young plants: frequent light watering  – Mature trees: deep irrigation at intervals Critical stages: flowering and fruit development Avoid waterlogging.

Irrigation Management

– Farmyard manure (FYM)  – Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium fertilizers Regular feeding boosts tree growth and fruit yield.

Manure & Fertilization

– Remove dead or diseased branches  – Maintain tree shape  – Improves sunlight penetration and productivity

Training & Pruning

– Trees start bearing in 3–5 years  – Fruits are harvested when fully red and ripe  – Harvest with bunches to avoid damage
