Govt increases budget for Agriculture & Farmers

The Union Government has significantly increased the budget allocation for the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare over the years, reaching ₹1,27,290 crore for the financial year 2025–26. The information was shared in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Bhagirath Choudhary, in a written reply.

According to the government, the allocation has witnessed a substantial rise from ₹21,933 crore in 2013–14, reflecting a strong policy focus on strengthening the agriculture sector and improving farmers’ livelihoods. This sharp increase underscores the Centre’s continued emphasis on boosting farm productivity, ensuring better returns to farmers, and expanding income support mechanisms.

The government highlighted that multiple schemes have been launched and expanded alongside the budget increase. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing agricultural output, promoting sustainable farming practices, and ensuring remunerative prices for farmers. Special attention has also been given to income support programmes and infrastructure development within the sector.

The rise in allocation is part of a broader strategy to modernize Indian agriculture and make it more resilient. Efforts include improving access to technology, strengthening supply chains, and encouraging diversification into allied sectors such as fisheries and horticulture.

Experts note that the enhanced budgetary support is expected to play a key role in addressing challenges like fluctuating farm incomes, climate risks, and rising input costs. At the same time, it is seen as a step toward achieving long-term goals such as doubling farmers’ income and ensuring food security.

Overall, the increased allocation for 2025–26 reflects the government’s continued commitment to prioritizing agriculture as a critical pillar of the Indian economy and rural development.
