From Assam Hills to London: GI-Tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger Makes Global Debut

Guwahati, March 7 — In a significant boost to India’s agricultural exports, Assam’s renowned GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger has made its international debut with its first shipment to London, marking a milestone for farmers in the northeastern state.

The inaugural consignment was ceremonially flagged off by Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora at Krishi Bhawan in Khanapara, Guwahati. The shipment, facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with exporters, signals the growing global demand for premium Indian agricultural products.

Karbi Anglong ginger, cultivated in the Singhasan Hills of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, is known for its strong aroma, high oil content, and distinctive pungent flavour. These unique characteristics earned it the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2015, officially recognising its origin and quality linked to the region.

Officials said the export represents a new opportunity for farmers in the hill district, where ginger is a major cash crop grown using traditional methods such as jhum and tila cultivation. The GI tag enhances the product’s authenticity and market value, making it attractive to international buyers seeking high-quality spices.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the development as a proud moment for the state’s farming community, noting that the export places Karbi Anglong’s growers on the global stage while strengthening “Brand Assam” in international markets.

Industry experts believe the successful shipment could open doors for larger exports of ginger and other GI-tagged products from the region, helping improve farmers’ incomes and expanding India’s footprint in the global spice trade.

The move is also expected to encourage more value-added agricultural exports from the Northeast, a region rich in unique and high-quality farm produce.
