IRRI and Vietnam Chart a Collaborative Course for Sustainable Agriculture

Hanoi, Vietnam: The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Vietnamese government have strengthened their partnership to advance sustainable agriculture, with a renewed focus on transforming the country’s rice sector through innovation and climate-smart practices.
The collaboration outlines a comprehensive 2026 work plan built around key priorities such as improving nutrition, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing farmer livelihoods. Central to the initiative is the promotion of high-quality, low-emission rice production systems that align with Vietnam’s broader green growth strategy.
Both sides are emphasizing the adoption of advanced technologies and science-based solutions, including biofortified rice varieties and low–glycemic index rice to improve public health outcomes. At the same time, efforts are being directed toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable farming techniques, better water management, and efficient residue handling.

The partnership also prioritizes capacity building and knowledge sharing, with pilot models and field demonstrations serving as testing grounds for scalable solutions. These initiatives are expected to generate critical data to refine cultivation practices and establish standardized systems for monitoring and verifying emissions in agriculture.
Vietnam, one of the world’s leading rice producers, faces growing challenges from climate change, particularly in the Mekong Delta. The collaboration with IRRI is seen as a strategic move to safeguard food security while ensuring environmental sustainability and economic resilience for farmers.
By integrating scientific research, policy support, and on-ground implementation, IRRI and Vietnam aim to create a more sustainable, low-carbon future for rice farming, setting a model for other rice-producing nations in Asia.
