APEDA Seeks Alternate Routes for India’s Agri Exports Amid West Asia Conflict

India’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has started exploring alternative shipping routes to ensure uninterrupted export of agricultural products amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The geopolitical tensions in the region have disrupted key maritime routes and major ports, affecting shipments of rice, fruits, vegetables, meat, and processed foods from India to Gulf markets.
According to officials, the crisis has caused delays in cargo movement, higher freight charges, and rising insurance premiums for shipments headed to the Gulf region. Exporters have reported that some consignments have been forced to return to Indian ports or be diverted to alternative transshipment hubs due to disruptions at important ports in the region.
To mitigate the impact, APEDA is coordinating with exporters, shipping companies, and logistics providers to identify alternate routes, including transshipment through ports in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Authorities are also advising exporters to plan shipments in advance and explore new logistics corridors to maintain supply chains.
West Asia remains one of India’s largest markets for agricultural and food exports. In 2025, India exported agricultural products worth about $11.8 billion to the region, accounting for more than one-fifth of the country’s total agri exports. Key products include basmati rice, spices, meat, fruits, and vegetables.
Industry stakeholders warn that prolonged disruptions could affect exporters as well as farmers, particularly those producing export-oriented crops. Rising logistics costs and shipment delays may also reduce the competitiveness of Indian products in international markets.
