India’s agricultural exports to hit $55 bn by 2025; Piyush Goyal says no concessions on sugar imports

India’s agricultural exports are expected to reach $55 billion by 2025, reflecting strong global demand for Indian farm products and the government’s push to expand export markets. However, the government has reiterated that it will not allow tariff concessions on sugar imports in any trade agreement, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said.

According to Goyal, India’s agricultural sector is witnessing steady export growth driven by improved productivity, diversification into high-value crops, and expanding trade partnerships. The target of $55 billion in exports highlights the growing competitiveness of Indian products such as rice, spices, marine products, fruits, and processed foods in global markets.

At the same time, the government remains cautious about opening sensitive agricultural sectors to foreign competition. Goyal clarified that India will not offer tariff concessions on sugar imports under any trade deal, stressing that protecting domestic farmers and the sugar industry is a priority.

The minister noted that several agricultural commodities—such as dairy products, poultry, meat, wheat, rice, and genetically modified crops—have also been kept outside certain trade negotiations to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers and maintain self-sufficiency in key food sectors.
